Improve Your Vision With These Easy Eye Exercises

Posted on: 3 December 2015

It's easy to take your eyes for granted. You don't really think about how well you may see or what kind of abuse they withstand until something happens to impair your vision. As with any body part, you should exercise your eyes to maintain your vision. Even if you already have glasses or contacts, you can exercise your eyes to prevent your vision from getting worse in some cases. Here are a few essential exercises to help with maintaining healthier eyesight.

Blinking

If you are intently viewing television or working diligently on the computer; you may tend to be so focused that you do not blink often. Here is a simple exercise to help. For two minutes, blink every three to four seconds and observe how your eyes feel. Then, for thirty seconds, don't blink for two minutes. You should feel a difference. The brief period of darkness will help your eyes remain fresher. This process reduces eye strain which can impact your vision.

Palming

This is a way to relax your eyes and relieve the stress around your eyes when you take a short computer or television break. Try this method:

  • Breathe deeply before you begin the process
  • Be comfortable and lean forward. Close your eyes.
  • Cup your hands with your palms over your eyes
  • Don't place pressure on your eyes and blink freely.

This process will rest your mind and give a few minutes of pressure release to your eyes. It will only take a few minutes and will make the working day less stressful. This process reduces light and stimulation from your eyes so they are able to truly rest for a few minutes.

Figure Eights

This simple process can increase flexibility of your eye muscles. Imagine a figure eight on the wall, floor, or ceiling. Once you can see the figure eight well in your mind with your eyes open, imagine turning the eight on its side. Scan the figure slowly using your eyes so you can clearly see that it is on its side then switch and do it the other way. It may feel strange at first, but it will help. This exercise can be a little more difficult since it relies on you seeing something that doesn't exist, but be open-minded and with practice, you will achieve it.

Anytime you have a few minutes try these exercises. It will surely be comforting and will become a welcomed part of a stressful or busy day. These simple exercises can impact your vision for a lifetime. For assistance, talk to an optometrist.
